COLUMBUS, Ohio – (September 16, 2025) – When Flex High School opened its doors in Columbus a decade ago, it was with just 25 students who were eager to experience a high school that offered personalized learning tailored to each student. Today, Flex High Columbus is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a free community event — Buckeye Backyard BBQ — at its newest location on Main Street. This marks the school’s third location in the city, serving nearly 800 students and expanding access to those in Whitehall and surrounding communities.
“We are so pleased to be celebrating 10 years in this community, serving thousands of students who were seeking a high school that could teach them in the way they learn best and that fits their schedule,” said Doug Joseph, Flex High board member. “This milestone represents an investment in the future of the Columbus community, ensuring more young people have access to the education and resources they need to graduate and become productive citizens.”
Joseph points out that 88 percent of Flex High students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, ten percent are experiencing homelessness and nine percent are English learners. Plus, the average age of students is 19 years old and behind in credits.
Over the years Flex High School has created a pathway for the most vulnerable students to graduate. Many like Aanycycia S. credit the school for changing their story. She enrolled in Culinary Arts Career Technical Education (CTE), where she enjoys cooking as a therapeutic outlet while developing real-world career skills. ”Flex gave me the tools and help to become whoever I want to be. I’m thriving now, and I know I can succeed, she said.”
Many more CTE pathways are available to Flex High students in information technology, hospitality, healthcare, art and business. Students can earn industry-specific certifications while in school and gain life skills that will help them succeed after graduation.
The Buckeye Backyard BBQ celebration is Saturday, September 20 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 5175 E Main Street. The free event is open to the public and will host community partners as well as a special appearance by the Ohio State Mascot, Brutus Buckeye. Visitors can look forward to an action-packed day of food, games and prizes.
